Car Breakdown Insurance
Most drivers add some form of car breakdown insurance to their motor insurance policy, however with 15 different car breakdown insurance providers and 80 different breakdown products; it can be a challenge deciding which to choose.
There are generally four different levels of cover offered by an insurer:
- 1.The most basic offered is often called ‘roadside’ or ‘roadside assistance’, with this level of cover a mechanic will visit you at the roadside only, and if unable to do so will tow you to the nearest garage or back home, whichever is nearer. The insurer often sets a distance limit.
- 2.The next type of car breakdown insurance on offer could be called ‘roadside & recovery’ and offers the same as above, however they will in addition tow you, your vehicle, and a set number of passengers to your home or other UK mainland destination.
- 3.Your next option is often called ‘at home’ or ‘home start’ – meaning that the level of cover provided extends to restarting your vehicle at home as well at the roadside.
- 4.The most superior levels of car breakdown insurance will offer all of the above, as well as offering additional benefits such as a replacement car, overnight accommodation, and further travel arrangements to get you to your destination if restarting the vehicle fails. These extensive policies sometimes include European cover, or alternatively this can be offered as a further add on option.
